Bent but not broken

Hello runners!! I’m Gelcys aka cheetah g and I’m a wife, mother runner with a sarcastic sense of humor. A little history on how I got where I am… I’ve been a runner my whole life, but unfortunately I was diagnosed with Scoliosis, which to those who don’t know its a curvature of the spine. I was 14 years old when Doctors found it and I was told I needΒ correctiveΒ surgery immediately. I must say for a 14-year-old who has never gotten a scratch this was very intimidating. Worst part was, I was told I could never run again. After spending 14 hours in the operation room it was all over, SUCCESS! My back was corrected now on my way to a long recovery.

20141015_224532Six months in, getting picked up from school, we got rear ended in a car accident, and requiring emergency surgery due to one of the metal rods put in my spine had come out! Eww yes it hurt…and BAD.Β PhysicalΒ therapy for months, another 2 more surgeries and years later I was doing better. Final outcome, I still have severe Scoliosis, had the rods taken out of my back, and have a higher hip on my left and my leg isΒ shorter by 1 inch. I was left with a nasty crooked scar, and forever chronic pains that won’t go away.

After many years and no contact, I met my husband RC who was in my senior classes in HS. But we never hung out or really talked and as soon as we graduated he headed off to the Army. When he got out and came home we hung out with mutual friends where our love story began. After having our son, weΒ decidedΒ to move to Central Florida for a change from the south Florida lifestyle, we couldn’t be happier. They are my world and would be lost without them.

collager

RC aka Alpha and I have always been active, but I always had a problem running after all my surgeries. We then started running, but 200 meters in, I would end up walking and was miles behind him. After severalΒ attempts and Doctors appointments they told me I can’t run because my left lung doesn’t have a lot of room due to my spine curving into it, among otherΒ physicalΒ issues, blah, blah, blah. It broke my heart. After moving to Orlando, I was able to do more outdoorΒ activities.Β I would walk with myΒ son to the park so he can play.

I always saw several people running, training, staying fit. It motivated me to go after what I really wanted to do in life. I told my husband. Β “I wanted to run!!” so he said “I’ll train you.” I got a little nervous since he was the fastest and the squad leader in his running team in the Army. Β Little did I know that was going to help me in the end. I started running, from meters to miles, slow and steady. I ended up with some chronic pain that I can’t do anything about because it stems from my Scoliosis. When I see a doctor they tell me I can’t handle running so I shouldn’t try.

My crooked spine

I suffer daily from back pain, worse on some days than others, shin splints are common due to my shorter leg, and the hip flexor…gets very irritated. Aside from all the issues I have from running. I learned to never give up and go after my goals. I sometimes have to push myself through the pain, let’s not forget the common runner injuries, because yes, I also have been blessed with those too. But you know what?? I’m a fighter, I learned to push through barriers and walls to make my dreams a reality!!! And now…here I am today…A MARATHONER!!!! I am doing what I never thought I could, so never give up on something you believe in, because if I can do it, ANYONE can!

I ran my first FULL MARATHON in January(you can read all about my Disney Marathon experience in my posts)!!!I have ran 5Ks, 10Ks, 10 Mile races and a Β few half marathons. It is a MAJORΒ accomplishment and Doctors can’t believe what I have done! My family and friends know me as the one who fights the biggest battles with a large dose of determination and it also has helped to have the support and motivation of my military husband and everyone in my life . So please stop by, share your story and stick around for a great running adventure! I love reading about stories of hard work and success and cant wait to read yours!

I think this is amazing! Wish you can takk to my daughter. She is a cross country runner and she too had the scoliosis surgery 2x. She is fused from l2 to t5. She is still in a lot of pain unfortunately and considering taking them out. She is now 18. She is at her wits and but refuses to quit. Doctor said she is completely fused, but i personally am afraid its not good for her to run if she takes them out. Any input would help. Keep on keepin on you are amazing!

Hey Vivian, I had to take my rods out due to complications but it didn’t take my pain away. I still have lots of issues and have had 4 spinal fusions and 1 removal. I am told I need to have another spinal fusion but I am holding off as long as I can. Swimming helps A LOT! And so does KT Tape and yoga.

Thank you for your inspirational story. I was told to stop running because I am too old (47 years old) by two MDs after I got my first shin splint injury. Instead of helping me with my shin splints, I instead get told to stop running. Your story is just what I needed to hear.

I started running last September with the goal of doing the Half at Disney, I had actually started in August but after a week had a stress fracture in my leg. With the support of family and friends I did it and finished the Half, I use the Galloway method so that made it easier for me but now I’m registered for the Goofy in 2014. Having the support of family and friends is very important and makes any goal seem possible

Such a great story! Thank you! I started running 30 years ago as a way to deal with giving up alcohol ( I am an alcoholic). Running and giving up drinking we’re the best choices I have ever made! Now 30 years later I am still running and still sober . Still it has been a long and at times difficult journey but every minute has been worth it. I highly recommend it! Again thank you and let’s just keep enjoying the run know matter how long or how short, how difficult or how easy it is a beautiful thing.

Hi! You’re such an inspiration. I too have a rather lengthy medical history. I was born w a congenital heart defect which was pretty much repaired but left me w restricted blood flow. I was never able to run. I also have Scoliosis… A backward S curve. Didn’t require surgery. Thank God, but my hips are out of whack & my left leg is about a half inch shorter. April 2012 I had a procedure done to improve my blood flow through the Pulmonary artery. Jan 2013 I decided I was going to be a runner. It took me a long time to run a mile. My fastest 1 mile to date is 12:35. I can go about 3.36 miles. I recently started having hip flexor pain. I assume its from the uneven legs/hips. I’m not fast & I may never be but I’m out there giving it my all. I’m running my first 5k race 6/1. My goal is to do a 10k in Oct. I have to remind myself where I started from & look where I am now. It’s so hard when you see everyone posting their awesome times/paces. I would be ecstatic to run a 10 min pace. But for now I’m just happy with what I can do. Thanks for sharing your story.

Cindy thank you for your comment. You are an inspiration yourself! Thats awesome you were able to over come all those obstacles. I know its not easy and I’m with you on the hip flexor pain. I get them quite often, also because I have uneven hips. But as long as I do my stretches I keep the pain under control. Im very proud of you and how far you’ve gotten!!! Its great you have set goals, thats a great form of motivation. Keep up the good work and good luck in your journey!

Wow…your story was very inspiring. I was diagnosed with mild scoliosis when I was 15, and was an inactive, over-weight teen. I was never really encouraged to do much physically as I had to be “careful of my back”. A funny thing happened to me when I turned 40….I said screw it and without much training I did a 5k in just over 47 minutes. I stopped, unfortunately–using all the usual excuses: It’s raining/snowing/too cold or too hot, my knee/back hurts, I’m not built to run, etc., etc. But I’m back, at almost 48, staring again following a Couch to 5K program (in my 4th week), registered for a 5k on June 1st and just joined a running group that meets once a week. One major factor that made it easy for me to quit before was not making connections with others with similar fitness goals to lend support and motivation. All the best to you. Looking forward to future postings on your running successes!

well I find that the leg swing is a BIG help before I head out for a run, and the floor hip flexor stretch helps, but the foam rolling has been the most effective for me

Wow what an inspiring story! The obstacles you have overcome are amazing and make me feel I can still press on even though there are days I feel like I am no longer a runner. I walked/ran a half marathon 3 years ago. That made me determined to run one. I was overweight and didn’t think I had any business running. I ran my first half in oct 2011and it was awesome! It took me 2:39 (my goal started at 2:20 but not getting all my training runs in i switched it to 2:30) but all I REALLY wanted to do was finish the darn thing. After that I got very sick and it took months for me to get rid of a nasty respiratory infection. That was the beginning of the spiral down. I started back into running but in aug 2012 I was officially diagnosed with hip bursitis (both hips) id wondered what the pain was for about a month. Finally that started to ease and then IT band syndrome in my right hip popped up. As that dissapated my left hip decided to get sciatic nerve pain issues. It has been over 4 weeks of that. So my true runs have been months and months ago. It is depressing not only because I crave the feeling that i get from running but because I’ve gained weight as a result. Im inspired by you saying you have pushed through some of the pain and . My spine is off and my right hip is higher than my left which is causing the pinch. I pray the chiropractor appts will help me! How did you stay motivated while you were layed up an unable to run? (Ive been instructed to not run til im out of pain since the chiro adjustments are not stable yet). Id love to hear your feedback as there are days I am committed to get beyond this, and then there are days where my mind says im washed up as a runner… any advice?

    1. runner unleashed Avatar
      runner unleashed

Thanks for your sweet comments Donna! You are an inspiration yourself!!! After going through all those annoying pains you still want to run! That is commendable =) It is hard when I have to be side lined from running, def isn’t easy and because of my condition it happens quite often. I am motivated by wanting to be successful. I set goals and im determined to meet them. That keeps me going on my bad days, and days I can’t run. But I still keep myself active by doing some cross training on days I can’t run.

Thank you for the inspirational blog. My teenage daughter was diagnosed with very severe scoliosis a couple years ago, and this scared her father and I. She has been great about it, but refuses to have surgery, so we are waiting and seeing – it’s her body, her decision. She has refused to stop horseback riding or any other sport, and doesn’t care if others see her crooked back and winged scapula. Her motto is “if you don’t like it, too bad”. She recently started running 5k races with me and I am so proud of her! I can’t wait to share your blog with her πŸ™‚

Thanks. I hope that she will reach out to you with questions, but she is a little defensive about talking about it. Thanks for the offer. Her thoracic curve is about 60 degrees, the dr wants to do surgery, but she has no pain and is adamant about not doing it. We’ll see if it slows down or stops progression. Her lumbar curve isn’t as large and has stopped. Once exams are over, I hope she checks out your blog πŸ™‚

I’ve been following your blog but never read the “about you” part. I’m so proud of you and so amazed. Keep up the great work. I have always been a runner too and have always had foot pain since I was about 4 or 5 years old I can remember waking up at night and soaking my feet in hot water and just crying. I went to a foot doctor who told me I have bunions (which my dad’s side of the family have all been born with). My grandma had them, my dad has them, I have them, and my oldest son has them. What is strange is that mine hurt all the time but no one else in my family had the pain like I did. My parents wanted me to have them removed when I was a teenager but I said no way, I’m not having surgery and then not being able to run and participate in activities in school. So I dealt with the pain. I never ran more than 5 miles until after my first son in 1999. I even ran while I was pregnant with him up until I was about 7 month pregnant. After he was born, I started running with the stroller and running with him on his bike and then running farther, up to 7 miles until my husband got me running a half marathon. I ran the half marathon, took my time, and didn’t have much pain but the days that followed were tough. I cried a lot. I kept running and ran about 3 more half marathons. I got pregnant again and did not run at all while I was pregnant. My feet hurt so bad and I felt really sick while prego. After my second son was born, I cried all the time, my feet hurt so bad. I saw another foot doctor and I finally decided to have the surgery before my youngest son started walking. My mom stayed with me so I could recover and it was terrible. The medication made me sick so I just took 3 Ibuprofen instead of my meds. My doctor thought I was crazy. I kept asking him when I could run again and he, again, thought I was crazy. I had to wait about 12 weeks after each surgery so 24 weeks total. As soon as I was done with recovery, I had to get back out there. That year I ran 4 half marathons pain free. It felt amazing. Occasionally I have a little pain here and there but for the most part I am pain free now. I have run 11 marathons with another one in about 3 weeks. So that’s my story. I really hope you have less pain and can keep on running. Love following your blog. Thanks for sharing your story.

Wow you are a trooper! Ever since my Harrington rod surgery 11 years ago my major fear has been the rods moving! I did fall down the stairs 2 years post op and it was scary but lucky I only had a fractured tail bone…so sorry to hear about the car accident that is just so unlucky 😦 glad to see you are so active and have a cute little family πŸ™‚ my main question is this; what was your pregnancy like? How much did your back pain increase? Also has your son shown any signs of scoliosis? I am hesitant to have a child because I don’t know how much more pain I can handle on a daily basis and I am afraid to pass this on to a child since both my mother and grandmother carried the disease as well.

Hey Holly, I was also told I would have a full bed rest pregnancy. Luckily, I never even got morning sickness, and the back pain was never there until the very end. It was minor pain due to the weight. The delivery was super super tough for me though. Since my spine is curved, they couldn’t give me the epidural properly so I went almost 24hrs labor without pain meds. It sucked! My son is still young and no one has concerns for Scoliosis yet. But we keep an eye on him as he grows.

I can completely relate to your story. Doctors did a chest x-ray on me at age 2 because they thought I had pneumonia. I did indeed, but they also found scoliosis. I was referred to a childrens hospital in Dallas that specialized in the area. I wore the Boston brace, Milwaukee brace. By the time I was nearing age 10, my curvature was over 75 degrees. The doctors knew I needed to have surgery or else risk not being able to walk. I had Harrington rods placed in my back in 1986 when the procedure was very new. Fast forward several years when I was being released by the childrens hospital when I turned 18 and they told me I would more than likely never be able to have children, and certainly not carry to term if I did. I have 4 beautiful kids (all delivered by C-section – 2 under general anesthesia, 2 with a spinal). My oldest does have mild scoliosis and his shoulder blade is prominent. My right shoulder blade is still very prominent and my body is slightly twisted due to the severe curvature I had. Now the curve is at approx. 20-25 degrees, but my lung capacity is diminished still. I am training for my first half marathon in Dec, which the beneficiary is the childrens hospital where I was a patient for 15 years.

wow we have VERY similar stories. except by the time they found my Scoliosis, it was too late for a brace and it progressed over 10 degrees in one year so they moved quickly. I was at 63 degrees when they operated and right now I am at 27 degrees. I haven’t gotten checked after I had my son. I feel like its more than that because I have ALOT of trouble breathing all the time (since it caves into my lungs) and my shirts and straps always fall off my shoulder…Keep me posted on your journey I would LOVE to hear about it. And GOOD LUCK on your half marathon you should do GREAT!!!!!! Don’t be afraid to reach out for any tips or advice!!!

Gelceys, my girlfriend had scoliosis surgery 25 years ago. Two years ago she found running and it changed her life. It was the escape she never had and she progressed to a 1/2 marathon. Unfortunately, the pain she lives with every day increased and she finally stopped and scheduled an appointment with a specialist. To her extreme disappointment she was told to avoid running – give it up. I believe that the easy answer is often given by medical professionals and would like to help her find support and possibly a doctor that will help her find a way to run. She is one of the most obstinate and stubborn people I know. She has been fighting memories for 25 years and it pains me to see her with no options than “put herself in a wheelchair early”. I would appreciate any advice you can give.

    1. runner unleashed Avatar
      runner unleashed

She sounds a lot like me, I deal with pain daily, sitting, standing, laying down you name it. I’ve had multiple surgeries so I have a lot of muscle damage. I no longer get told “don’t run, you cant” I now get “how did you run?!?” I have learned many things from running, the main thing being NEVER GIVE UP. It is VERY hard for me to run and it takes a strong aka stubborn person to handle it. Luckily I am both, and so does your girlfriend. Unfortunately, there is nothing directly you can do to help her. All you can do is be there for her and give her the support she needs. She is the one that has to fight it, keep going, and let nothing stop her. I have been through it all with no options left except deal with it. Instead of crying and being upset about not being able to live normally, I decided to the one thing I “apparently cant do” I RUN. It’s MY escape, MY run, MY success. Most Doctors find it easier to just tell her she can’t run (I dont know how severe her case is) But she should find a Doctor who TRULY wants to help her. There are many things to help runners like us be successful, we just have them. Tell her to contact me and I can try to help her. Good luck if you need anything else I am here.

Just wrote you a whole beautiful long post and my computer blipped… I also have scoliosis and run halfs! I happened to see your post about KT tape and I’m so glad I did. Scoli-sisters unite! πŸ˜€

aw Christine that sucks! How bad is your Scoliosis curve? Did you also have any spinal fusion done? Give KT Tape a try!!! It works PERFECT for me. I sometimes use the Scoliosis application to ease the pain. ha I love that- Scoli-sisters unite =)

My S-curve was 45 and 40 degrees before I was fused T5-L3 in 2005 – they were able to get it back to less than 10 in both curves and give me an inch of height back! I actually have more peripheral nerve problems than back pain most of the time, unless I do something stupid like heft around bags of potting soil or dog food…

You having your rods out reminds me of last time I went to my spine surgeon – I had not idea that was so common, but he misunderstood me asking about something else and said he didn’t think my rods needed to come out at this time. I replied “Good, because I’ve grown rather attached to them!” (Ba-dump chhh!) He just stared at me – how come doctors always have sucky senses of humor?

I use KT tape on my feet when I run! Because of my nerve problems I have an odd running gait that leaves me with HUGE blisters on the balls of my feet if I go over 6 miles – two layers of the cotton KT tape (vodka or rubbing alcohol first!) and I’m good to go! My husband says it’s like a boxer getting his hands taped before a fight πŸ™‚

LOVE your blog! My lumbar vertebrae are fused. I had the surgery done when I was 16. It wasn’t until I was 24 that I found the love of running. I have done 3 marathons and a few halfmarathons so far.

I LOVE running but know that I need to do other things to keep my core strong and my muscles flexible! So I cross train a ton and do yoga! THANK YOU FOR THIS! I just crossed my first relay race (Hood To coast) off my bucket list.

I look forward to following your blog. I just posted it on my facebook page for others to follow πŸ™‚

You are so amazing and inspire me in so many ways!!! I learned about your story in one of the running groups on Facebook! I was overwhelmed with joy to see you accomplishing all that you have and your story hits home for me. I also have scoliosis and was diagnosed when I was 11, had surgery at 12 and at the time was an athlete to the core, but never a runner. I was told I’d never be able to do these things that I loved anymore because of Scoliosis…the month before my surgery…my father passed away. So imagine this 12 year old little girl about to undergo the scariest moment of her life, only to lose her father, her protector….just weeks before. I was devastated but we continued with the procedure, he would’ve wanted that. Anyway…years later, I decide its time to do something different, be bold! So I start running after being bored with just walking…I love it & I’m pretty great at it!!!!!! I do have back pain, shoulder pain, hip pain…BUT, my love for running outweighs that, so I keep at it! I see a half-marathon & maybe even a marathon in my future! I don’t share this story with people, many of my runner friends don’t even know, but when I saw your amazing story I was compelled to share! God bless you & keep it up! You rock!!!!!!

Wow Ladonna! You have a pretty incredible, and very similar story!!! I am sorry about you losing your father. I actually kind of know what it feels like. I am glad you have over come it all and came out shinning on the other end!!! =) I am glad you shared your story with me. I knew I wasn’t the only runner out there with severe Scoliosis! I have chronic pains I deal with daily (too many surgeries) but I deal with them. I have no other options lol The running causes pain, but it keeps the most intense pain under control. I am with you there on the hips, back pain, and shoulder pain(are you my lost twin lol) But I keep running through it! Keep me posted on your journey. I would LOVE to hear more about it!
      thanks for sharing

You are very inspirational! I am a new runner. Relatively new. I am 45. I was training for my first half-marathon. I do a lot of walking. Never have stamina or endurance. I have scoliosis, but not extreme. My mom had extreme scoliosis and died after the rod surgery (a complication not due to scoliosis). I have 3 relatives on my maternal side of the family that are disabled with rheumatoid arthritis. We are also….big. I need to lose some weight. I have always struggled with my weight. Anyway, I had extreme pain back in July. July 3, 2013. Sore after training. Did my foam roller and stretches. 2 days later I was in extreme pain and couldn’t walk. I found I have a lumbar synovial cyst. Tried everything until I am down to surgery. Chiropractor and orthopedist tell me to never run again regardless. The cyst is around L4/5 and pressing on my sciatic nerve! I refuse to take pain meds. I am barely functioning so I guess surgery is it. I hope to come back to running soon. This tells me it is possible. Thank you. Thank you.

I was never a runner… In fact I was the one hiding behind the bleachers in PE while others did laps around the track. πŸ˜‹ So- over the last seven years I’ve battled stage 3 colon cancer and stage 2 breast cancer. Both were aggressive and both required life altering surgeries and treatment. Once that was behind me, I quickly decided that I needed to get my butt in gear and start taking care of myself. I’ve been running four two years, and have run several 5K. I have a permanent colostomy, which can make running somewhat of a challenge. But life is good, and I’m not letting anything stop me at this point. (Except maybe the shin splints and sciatic nerve!) I’ve signed up for my first Half in the Spring. Hoping I didn’t bite off more than I can chew!!!! I have six months to train πŸ™‚

I’m so glad I found your blog. My left leg draws up 3/4 of an inch due to scoliosis. I started running last spring, taking it very slow. I was doing well until I suddenly developed a stress reaction (almost stress fracture) of the left femoral neck.

Do you use inserts in your shoes, and if so, what kind?

    Keep up the good work!

    1. runner unleashed Avatar

Hey Stephanie, I do use an insert in my left shoe but it is just a regular heel lift. Nothing special to it. Ever since I started running with it, it has alleviated hip pain and discomfort.

It was nice reading this article….what degree is the curve in your spine??? I recently found out my scoliosis has gotten worse and now have a 43Β° curve….it causes me alot of discomfort and will soon be going go see a neurosurgeon… I’ve been told not to run for the time being and when I ask my chiropractor when I can start again he doesn’t give me an answer….I’m so upset…I’ve only been running for just over a year but have completed 5 ks 10 ks one half marathon and was just starting to train for my first marathon and had to stop 😦
Anyways it’s nice to hear someone with the same condition is out there chasing her passion…hoping I’ll be able to do the same thing soon πŸ™‚

Jessica wow what a story =( I don’t know how bad my curve is now, but before I had my son I was at 27 degrees. I know its gotten worse, because my bra straps and shirts fall off one should :/ Good luck with your appointment and keep me posted. That is the same thing they told me, and told me to never run again. Obviously I have found a way for it to work for me. But I suggest following what they say at this point and hope you get better asap so you get that marathon title sooner than later.

Love your story. I have an issue too with scoliosis. Also have shift in hips and my ribs especially. I have been to many doc and each one tells a different story. I never want to give up my running and tri training but wanted to know if you had any luck with massage therapy for scar tissue in the back and spine. Also did you receive treatments when pregnant. Thinking of having another child and I heard it is not good to work on back when pregnant. Thanks!
