Well it looks like Walt Disney World has just made an announcement for another “newish” runDisney event. It is called Star Wars Rival Run Weekend. It really is just Star Wars Dark Side half weekend but it has a little twist now. It will make its debut new year April 5, 2019.
What sets this one apart is that now you can choose your own destiny. Will you run with the empire? Or will you run with the rebels? You will be able to choose which side of the force to run with and you’ll get a one-of-a-kind medal.
The main sponsor of the race is Otterbox and it will have the kids races, 5K, 10K, and the half, along with the Rival Run challenge and the Kessel run challenge. To complete the Rival Run challenge, you must register for THAT race and complete both the 10K and the half to receive the Rival Run challenge medal which totals 19.3 miles. If you register for each race separately, it won’t count as the challenge.
The Kessel run challenge is a little different. Besides having a beautiful millennium falcon medal, it’s a virtual 13.1 miles run. Which as you know, you can do it at your own pace, own time and even divide the miles up. To get the challenge medal, you must register and complete this run, AND the Star Wars Rival Half or the Star Wars Rival run challenge. Once you have completed the races, you’ll get your Kessel medal at the finish line.
As far as when registration opens, it has yet to be announced. But the prices are up and you can check them out here, under registration. runDisney does an excellent job on these themed races. And no, I’m not just saying that because I am one of the biggest Star Wars nerds. I say that because they do it BIG. I like the course and the enthusiasm of everyone up and volunteering at o’dark thirty. They are there way before the runners and leave way after the runners.
I am hoping to register for the Kessel run challenge next year and looking forward to see all my favorite Star Wars characters and storm troopers. Will you be there?
